About the Event
Applicants requesting approval for a California CCW from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department must complete the 1 day (8 total hours) course and pass the Initial Shooting Qualification for all firearms on their CCW.
Riverside County Students -
Students may have a maximum of six firearms listed on their CCW.
THIS COURSE IS REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO YOUR APPLICATION WITH THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. YOU MUST STILL COMPLETE THE APPLICATION PROCESS BEFORE OR AFTER COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE.
*** If you are a novice shooter, we encourage you to take an intro to handguns class prior to attending this course***
Who Should Take this Course
This course is for residents of Riverside County who possess a valid CCW permit that will expire within 180 days, or one that has already expired (by no more than 30 days), and wish to renew their CCW permit. PLEASE NOTE: Many renewal applicants are not passing the qualification process due to the fact that they don't practice enough. You cannot expect to pass this course if the last time you shot your firearm was at your Initial Course. Having a CCW is a lifestyle and a perishable skill. It is recommended that you practice before coming to class for your renewal ensuring you are able to hit the target in the desired location (inside the 8 ring on a standard B27 target). There is no excuse for a renewal applicant to fail this qualification.
What You Should Know
We shoot in all types of weather. Rain, wind, and heat. Shootings can occur in any temperature. Practice like your life depends on it. Of course, if the rain or wind is too extreme, we'll cancel.
Course Requirements
You are required to apply with for your renewal at least 180 days PRIOR to your expiration. Failure to do so may result in you not being able to carry concealed until your renewal is processed.You must bring all firearms that you want on your CCW (limit 6, no caliber restriction) UNLOADED to the class. Leave all ammo in your vehicle and have your ID & CCW ready upon arrival.
$30 range fee NOT included in the cost of your class
Firearms - Must be registered to you and meet California DOJ legal configuration
You MUST have a Kydex (molded plastic) IWB (Inside-the-Waistband) or OWB (Outside-the-Waistband) holster that will be inspected for safety and comply with department guidelines. The holsters you bring should be the holsters you'll use when carrying concealed.
No ankle, thigh-rigs, or off-body holsters. Holsters should have retention or OTHER ACCEPTABLE METHODS of retaining the weapon in the holster. Kydex holsters have, and are able to adjust retention. NO LEATHER, NYLON, FABRIC, BELLY BAND, OR COLLABSIBLE HOLSTERS.
You will be required to fire your firearm on a Sheriff’s designated range, and qualify with a passing score of 80% or better.
Bring AT LEAST 50 ROUNDS FOR EACH FIREARM you intend to qualify with. If you do not have the required ammo, the range has it available for sale.
You will be required to use the firearm's standard iron sights or holographic sights (RMR Optic) during qualifications; using lasers for the qualification process will be prohibited.
Eye and ear protection
An 80% passing score requires satisfactory completion of the following tasks 3 tasks:
Starting from the 15-yard line from a "holstered" position, you will empty a magazine with 6 rounds (or cylinder) at your target. WHEN DIRECTED, you will reload and move forward to the 10 yard line.
At the 10-yard line and starting from the "holstered" position, you will empty a magazine with 6 rounds (or cylinder) at your target. WHEN DIRECTED, you will reload and move forward to the 7 yard line.
At the 7-yard line and starting from the "holstered" position, you will empty a magazine with 6 rounds (or cylinder) at your target, firing four shots to the body and two to the head until all ammunition is expended, after which you will clear and show a safe gun.
Wear appropriate clothing. No open-toed shoes. No slip on shoes, Crocs, or combat flip-flops. It is recommended that you wear pants that have front and rear pockets, no sweat pants or pants that do not have belt loops for a sturdy belt.
FAILURE to bring all required equipment (firearms, ammo, belt, holsters & range gear), or failure to pass the weapons inspection, qualify with a passing score of 80% or better, or any unsafe range violation will result in the non-issuance of the CCW course completion certificate.
Additional handgun qualifications are an additional $25.00 each
*ALL FIREARMS MUST BE LOCKED IN A SECURED CONTAINER.
**PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE TO CLASS WITH A LOADED AND/OR CONCEALED WEAPON.
***DOUBLE-CHECK THAT YOUR FIREARMS ARE UNLOADED PRIOR TO ARRIVING AND CHECK THEM IN AT REGISTRATION.
Qualifications for Riverside County consists of:
6 shots (or max capacity) at distances of 15, 10, and 7 yards each
Must score at least 80% on a standard B-27 target with each handgun
Upon successful completion of the Shooting Qualification Test, students will be issued a qualification form.
